Buenos Aires, November 16 (NA) -- Brazilian Luis Felipe Tavares won the second FIA South American Simracing Championship, held at the Argentine Automobile Club (ACA).
This is the first time in the history of simracing eSports that an event has been held in Argentina. It featured 13 virtual pilots from the region and was watched by thousands of fans worldwide.
Held at the ACA headquarters in Buenos Aires, Tavares was the winner, followed by his compatriot Victor Affonso De Miranda and Argentine Dino Filippa, who completed the podium.
According to the Argentine News Agency, pilots from Uruguay, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Peru, and Venezuela also participated in the championship.
Simracing is the practice of competing in motor races using realistic driving simulators that replicate the physics, circuits, and cars of the real world.
"Just as we were present at the origins of traditional motorsport, today we are crossing a new frontier that allows competitors and the public to experience the passion for racing from a completely different perspective," said César Carman, president of the ACA.
He also emphasized the need to "promote and develop simracing and create a competitive platform that allows virtual pilots in the region to demonstrate their skill, represent their countries, and foster professional-level practice".
For her part, Fabiana Ecclestone, vice president of FIA South America, thanked the authorities of the ACA and all those present: "We know that many pilots currently train in simulators, but they are also a gateway for people who want to enter the world of motorsports".
And she added: "All the countries competing today reflect the strength and representativeness of South America in motorsports".
The tournament had a Qualification and Races format, governed by the new FIA eSports International Sporting Code (CDI), and was streamed worldwide.
The event was also attended by the top authorities of the ACA; Hernán Lombardi, Minister of Economic Development of the City; Nahuel Celerier, Undersecretary of Productive Policies of the same ministry; and Buenos Aires deputy Sandra Rey.
In addition, renowned driver Nicolás Varrone, a new Formula 2 driver, welcomed the 13 simracers.
